Art Literature

Chapter I: Pakistan

As humans, we are curious. We seek meaning, ask questions, and revisit what we thought we knew.

At Daira, we believe that writing and reading about art is essential to how it grows and endures. Through critical, reflective, and research-based texts, art is interpreted and expanded – with its meanings challenged and its histories preserved. On this page you will find publications from artists, curators, researchers, and writers engaging critically with art and its many contexts. Each piece of writing invites deeper thinking, and you’re welcome to join the circle.

You can submit your writing by clicking the “Submit a New Publication” button and completing the form. Each article is open to contributors and peer review – that means if you have constructive feedback, additional knowledge or perspectives or simply have international cross-references, you can submit this via the “Submit a Contribution” button. Each year, Daira will consolidate and publish a number of these pieces for collection in physical form. All Authors and Contributors will be credited at all times.

Call for Submissions: Writing on Calligraphy

To accompany our curated launch on contemporary calligraphy, Daira invites submissions of academic writing that explores the evolving role of calligraphy script, text, and language in visual art throughout Pakistan.
We are seeking:

  • Essays, theses, or academic articles on calligraphy or text-based practices
  • Critical responses to key artists, exhibitions, or pedagogical frameworks

We welcome contributions from artists, scholars, researchers, curators, and students whose work intersects with the visual, conceptual, or cultural dimensions of calligraphy. Submissions may be previously published or unpublished, and will be considered for online publication and print.
